Why was the Berlin Wall impassable?

The wall was built by East Berlin (Soviet side) to keep their citizens from leaving and going to West Germany. Eventually, there was a "no man's land" between the two sides and the eastern side was guarded by armed guards who shot anyone who trespassed in that area. As the years passed, a few people did make it across, giving hope to many more who died trying. There was a check point, always difficult to maneuver past.
