How many heifers do cows have?

This is a difficult question to answer, since the sex of a calf is actually predetermined by the sire, not the dam. Also, how many heifers a cow has in her lifetime is more variable than you can imagine: some cows never give birth to heifer calves, others give birth to nothing but heifer calves, and still others can have a ratio anywhere from 10:1 in heifer calves or vice versa. When naturally breeding cows, or when you are not using sexed semen on cows and heifers, you really don't know the sex of a calf until it's born. Most producers don't have enough money to do an ultrasound on their cows, so they have to wait until calving season to see whether a particular cow of theirs has thrown a bull or a heifer.

Does a head of cattle equal one cow?

Not necessarily. It means cattle in a collective term, not cows as in only cows with calves, or dry cows or pregnant cows or bulls or steers or heifers or whatever. When a cattleman says that he has 50 head of cattle, he means cows, bulls, steers, heifers and calves, not just the cows themselves.
