Large wind turbines now produce about 2 MWe or 2000 kW, at maximum power. Depending on location which determines how much of the time you get enough wind but not too much requiring a shutdown to prevent the machine wrecking itself, you will get 1/3 of this on average. However if we stick with the max rating of 2000 kW, then if each house takes say 2 kW this will power 1000 houses. Now 2 kW will cover the lighting and power the heating system of the house (assuming this is not electric), ie it will just drive the circulating pump or fans, computer, TV, fridge, freezer, etc, but if you start electric cooking the power demand will rise sharply, probably at least 5 kW to cook a full meal for a family. Then you have other intermittent loads like dishwashers and clothes driers, which can amount to several kilowatts. This of course is why we have a grid system for delivery of electric power, in which some power plants can respond quickly to changes in load demand. Wind turbines are more suited to providing base or steady power, provided the wind conditions are right.

Why is the gas turbine called as the power plant?

A gas turbine is one type of power plant. It produces power by burning gas to turn the turbine.

How many watts does a wind turbine produce?

A single 1.8 mega watt turbine, in one year, can produce 5.0 million kilowatts of electricity and supply enough power to generate for five hundred homes. 20 1.8 mega watt turbines, in one year can produce 2 billion kilowatts of electricity and supply enough power to generate 10,000 homes. 20 1.8 mega watt turbines, over twenty years, can produce 100 billion kilowatts of CLEAN electricity and supply enough power to generate 10,000 homes.

How many homes does one windfarm power?

The number of homes that one windfarm can power varies depending on the size and location of the windfarm, as well as the average electricity consumption per household. On average, a typical onshore wind turbine with a capacity of 2-3 megawatts can power around 500-900 homes per year.

Can a 1.5 megawatt wind turbine produce enough electricity of 400 homes?

Well, let's do the math. Electrical usage is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) so we must figure out the kWh production of one turbine. One 1.5MW wind turbine has a rated generation capacity of 1.5 megawatts maximum output. In reality, because of wind inconsistency and down time, actual output averages around 25%. So if we use a 25% factor rate; 1.5MW X .23 = .375MW or 375kW actual output. There are 8760 hours in a year (365 X 24), so the equation to figure out how many kWh one turbine produces in a year would be 375kW X 8760 = 3,285,000kWh. The average U.S. household in 2011 used approx. 12,000Wh (U.S. DOE). So, 3,285,000 divided by 12,000 = 273 homes. However, one turbine couldn't consistently power even one home because of the intermittent generation. So the correct answer is one turbine and one coal plant could power 274 homes.
