The time difference normally varies from 17 to 21 hours depending on which part of America you come from and whether New Zealand has day light saving at that time of the year. So if you are in New York which is 5 hours behind GMT and it is summer in New Zealand, then the time difference is 17 hours. But if you are in Los Angeles which is 8 hours behind GMT and its Winter in New Zealand, you are 21 hours behind. An interesting factor is that it is quite possible that you are 2 calender days behind New Zealand! And its quite interesting too. The International Date Line is set such that no two countries are separated by more than a day. So the maximum difference between two countries can at best be 24 hours. However, during winter, New Zealand, given its geographical position, has to add an extra hour to save on daylight. This means, that in addition to the maximum of 12 hours allowed for any country, it adds a further one hour and moves 13 hours ahead of GMT. So if you happen to visit one of United States Minor Outlying Islands which are GMT-12, you will for an entire one hour everyday from April to September, be 2 days behind New Zealand!!
