According to Paul, Peter was one of the leaders, or pillars, of the church in Jerusalem. He seems to have made a number of visits to Syria and on one occasion, Paul publicly condemned him for not eating with Gentile Christians. We have no reliable evidence of how many journeys Peter made to Syria or whether he travelled farther afield.
A second-century tradition has it that Peter travelled to Rome where he took charge of the Christian congregation there, and was later executed on the orders of Nero. This is implicitly contradicted by Clement of Rome in 1 Clement, as he was obviously unaware that Peter had either travelled to Rome or been executed there.
