The number of jurors hearing a specific type of trial can vary greatly depending on the state and the court system involved. Some states require as few as 7 jurors for some criminal and/or civil trials while others will vary from that number up to 12 jurors for serious offenses and capital crimes.

It can depend on your state's established procedures as to how many jurors must be seated for what kind of cases. I know of juries that consisted of 7 members on minor misdemeanor and traffic cases, up to 12 jurors for trying felony cases.

They are voir dired from a random selection from the panel.
