Clarinets are most often made from African blackwood. This is a heavy black wood that comes from the Mpingo tree. The same is used for most oboes and wooden piccolos. Second most common would be plastic or resin. Clarinets were also made of metal at one time and are still seen occasionally. Some clarinets are now made of a mixture of resin and wood. Other woods such as cocobolo and rosewood are sometimes used. Boxwood was the material of choice for the earliest clarinets.

The majority of clarinets used by professionals are made from the hardwoods grenadilla or mpingo - both originating in Africa. However, clarinets sold in stores are often made from rubber, plastic or even metal.
Bass clarinets are primarily made from a combination of materials, with the body typically constructed from grenadilla wood or synthetic materials like plastic for durability and weather resistance. The keys and mechanisms are usually made from metals such as nickel silver or brass, often plated with silver or gold for aesthetics and to prevent tarnishing. Additionally, the mouthpiece is usually made from hard rubber or acrylic, which contributes to the instrument's sound quality.
