There is no standard computer keyboard, although many manufacturer companies imitate the keyboards of PC's. Mainly keyboard are categorized into three parts.

• PC keyboard, with 84 keys
• AT keyboard, also with 84 keys
• AT enhanced keyboard, with 101 keys

There are several different types of keyboards for the Apple Macintosh. All of them are called ADB keyboards because they connect to the Apple Desktop bus (ADB). The two main varieties of Macintosh keyboards are the standard keyboard and the extended keyboard, which has 15 additional special-function keys. Microsoft product keyboard has 103 keys with 3 special-function keys. IBM keyboard has 101 keys.

This varies from keyboard to keyboard. The keys are generally laid out like so:

Topmost row: Esc, F1 - F12, Scroll lock, Print Screen, Pause/Break: 16 keys

Number row: ~, 1-9,0, -,=, backspace: 14 keys

QWERTY row: Tab, qwertyuiop[]\: 14 keys

ASDF row: Caps lock, asdfghjkl;' Enter: 13 keys

ZXCV row: left Shift, zxcvbnm,./ Right Shift, : 12 keys

Bottom row: Ctrl, Alt, Space, Alt, Ctrl: 5 keys

Top right: Home, Insert, Page Up, Delete, End, Page Down: 6 keys

Arrow keys: 4 keys

Number pad: 17 keys.

This is a total of 84 keys, 101 with a number pad.

Windows keyboards generally have 2 windows keys and a context menu key, making a total of 87 keys, 104 with a number pad.

Other keyboards have different variations. Eg, function keys, or sound adjustment keys.

Unfortunately, there isn't a "standard" computer keyboard, although most would argue that the QWERTY keyboard with Windows keys (a 104-key keyboard) is the most popular, and therefore the standard.

The early keyboards on the IBM PC had 83 or 84 keys to handle English alphabet, numbers, special characters and control keys including tab, return, space, shift, delete, insert, arrow keys and and special function keys interpreted by computer programs.

Today the standard keyboard has 101 keys including more functions keys including screen display controls as well as a numeric key keypad. Keyboards for other languages have additional keys to meet the needs of the languages alphabet.
