A lot! Breech loading simply means loaded from the rear of the barrel, instead of the muzzle. There are "trapdoor" rifles, top break, bolt action, lever action, autoloading, pumps, "twist" action, and a few others that did not really work out.

What are the different types of hunting rifles?

Depends on how you want to define "Type". There are muzzle loading guns that use black powder and a lead ball, and breech loaders (use cartridges). There are rim fires, like the .22 LR, and center fires, like the 30-30 or .308. There are rifles and carbines (short barreled rifles). There are heavy rifles for big games, like the 30-06, rifles for REALLY big game, like the 460 Weatherby, and light rifles for "varmints", like the .220 Swift. Many people will distinguish type by how the rifle functions. There are top break single shots, top break double barreled rifles, single shot lever actions, repeating lever actions, pumps, auto loading, and bolt actions. There are also rifle/shotgun combinations, with one rifle barrel, and one shotgun barrel. A personal favorite is the drilling- based on the German word for 3- it is a side by side shotgun, with a rifle barrel beneath the shotguns. Many were custom made by really good gunmakers, and a beautiful just to look at-

When were rifles used?

Rifles evolved from smoothbore muskets. It is evident that rifles were in use from the 17th Century, but the 'rifling' was a hexagonal barrel and matching bullet, for improved accuracy. The Pennsylvania and Kentucky muzzle-loading rifles were the first real step to achieving accurate fire on enemies. Both were used in the American War of Independence against red-coated line infantry of the British, by experienced hunters. They both fired a .50cal patched ball out of a rifled barrel. this gave accuracy out to and exceeding 150yds, much farther than the range of the 'Brown Bess' smoothbore used by the British (50yds). This gave the Americans a 100yd advantage, and they used the earliest form of sniper tactics such as hiding in trees to avoid being shot themselves. They wore dull-coloured clothing to avoid being seen and picked off British officers to lower morale. Many regiments fled from the americans - the fire seemed to be coming from nowhere. The American hunters in the Independence war were in fact the first real snipers. But their rate of fire was 1 round every 90 seconds - far too slow for effective sniping. The next step was breech loading. During the American Civil War Rifles such as the Sharps came to be used by snipers. One shot was recorded as taking out a Confederate Artillery Officer at 600yds. This, combined with the breech-loading mechnism which gave a rate of fire of 1 shot every 10 seconds AND telescopic sights, provided the sniper with a fantastic and practical rifle.

How many kinds of rifles are there?

Rifles have been around since the middle of the 15th century. This likely places the number of different rifle designs into multiple thousands. More broadly, rifles can be muzzleloading or breechloading with single or multiple barrels. They can also be single-shot or repeaters. Repeating rifles can be manually operated, semi-automatic (autoloading), or fully automatic. Each of those categories can be further subdivided by action type.
