I'm not sure what you mean by this question. Hermit Crab is a term used to refer to many different species of crabs that live in shells that have been cast off by snails. They can be marine hermit crabs, or land hermit crabs. Within these categories there are many different species. The Genus Coenobita contains 16 different species of terrestrial (land) hermit crabs. The Genus Paguras refers to those species of marine hermit crabs.
A lot
Zero. Hermit crabs lay eggs.
No, hermit crabs like many other creatures have exoskeletons.
You can tell a land hermit crab from a water hermit crab by looking at the claws/arms or legs. If it is a water crab it will be blueish and if land crab it will be pinkish purpleish. If your crab is a water crab don't just throw it in water and leave it there, put a tiny bowl in it's tank or cage that is low to the ground and make sure that the water level is a bit lower than the hermit crabs top of its legs. Also have a wet sponge for each kind of hermit crab in the crabs tank.
yes they are protected in California as California is kind of a tropical country with many seas and they are many hermit crabs which represents California, thus California protects the species of hermit crabs
Land hermit crabs lay their eggs and carry them in their shell until they are ready to hatch. A female crab will be holding them on the sides of her abdomen and they are quite easy to spot because there are so many of them. She will release them in the ocean when they are ready.
Only 3 to 5 at a time. I own hermit crabs myself , so I know what they are like and how many you need :)
wild hermit crabs are scavingers so they'll eat things from dead fish, algee, some times fish poo and seaweed and meats.(while there domesticaded cousins eat special made food you buy a stores.)There is no such thing as a wild hermit crab's "domesticated cousin". Land hermit crabs cannot be bred in captivity, and every single land hermit crab that you find for sale was caught from the wild. Land hermit crabs can survive on the store-bought diet because they are scavengers and can eat a variety of things. It is best to also provide a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, protein, algae/seaweed, etc. Many pet stores carry freeze-dried shrimp, dried seaweed, etc. that hermit crabs will enjoy. Keep in mind that some store-bought fish foods have copper added, which is toxic to hermit crabs, so check the label.
There are not many hermit crab predators. Their shells protect them. Man is the greatest threat to hermit crabs.
in the hundreds
