The Threatened Species Scientific Committee of the Australian Government has put the koala population in the 'hundreds of thousands'. The Australia Koala Foundation believes that koala numbers in the wild have dropped to below 80 000, with recent research indicating the figure may be as low as 43 000.
Kangaroo populations vary widely throughout Australia from season to season, according to the environmental conditions. Figures across the entire continent of Australia are not available. Some figures are available for New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia. In 2007, across these four states alone, there were approximately 7.646 million red kangaroos, 3.155 million western grey kangaroos, 10.344 million eastern grey kangaroos and 2.864 million wallaroos. This does not include the many wallaby species found across Australia, or pademelons, quokkas, bettongs or potoroos.
Estimates vary. Experts say there are as few as 80,000 koalas left in the wild, while the Australian Koala Foundation estimates figures are possibly as low as 43,000, and certainly not more than 80,000.
Between 2005 and 2006, there were approximately 4611 koalas in Australia. Since then, the amount of Aussie koalas has dramatically decreased.
The only koalas outside of Australia are those found in a small selection of zoos.
