If you look at an original map of the park, there appears to be 5 distinct sections or "lands" for a better word. Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, Adventureland and Mainstreet. New Orleans Square is clearly visible as almost it's own entity but it does appear to be part of the larger Adventureland. Critter Country came latter as part of Frontierland and of course Toon Town was later added to the back of the park.

Whether that part of the park is Main Street USA (a welcoming area) or New Orleans Square, Adventureland, Fantasyland, Toontown Square, or Tommorowland, there's something for everybody there. And even if you're not in Disneyland Resort, there are other parks nearby Disneyland that have their own "lands" too. Disney's California Adventure (across the walkway) has "lands" too, but those are sporadically placed.
