It sounds like "bridged" but it's actually an older word, "abridged." That means a short version, an abbreviated version. So an abridged dictionary is shorter than the big, full-size dictionary you may have seen at the library. It is often pocket-size and only has the most commonly used words.

When something is described as pocket sized, it doesn't necessarily mean it wil fit into a pocket. It just means is much smaller than the original. Another good example is a pocket trumpet. It's just a small trumpet, but it won't fit into a pocket.
