According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 158,000 employed librarians in the U.S. in 2006. However, what the bureau calls a librarian may be different from what you think is a librarian.

The minimum educational requirement for most librarians is a Masters degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited university. Librarians with this degree (and possibly others, depending on the field they work in) are commonly called a 'professional librarians.' The number above likely refers to the number of professional librarians.

Besides professional librarians, there are also a wide range of staff ranging from the people who shelve the books to library supervisors that are called 'librarians' by the public. People in the field may call these people 'library staff', 'paraprofessionals,' or 'library assistants.' So, depending on what you have in mind, the number may be vastly understated. I would probably add another 6 times that amount if you consider 'librarian' to include 'all people who work in a library.'

Are most librarians athletic?

The stereotypical librarian is by no means athletic, but without a thorough survey of librarians to quantify just how many are actually athletic, there is no way to know for sure. Some librarians are athletic, while others are not; the profession consists of a diverse range of individuals, from couch-sitters to marathon runners. But since librarians tend to be book-loving information nerds, then it would be safe to say that most librarians probably aren't athletic.
