For most of European history the Iliad and The Odyssey were the earliest known poems. This meant that almost all later European poetry made use of the Iliad or the Odyssey in one way or another. During the twentieth century some poems earlier than the Iliad or the Odyssey were reclaimed:- particularly the Epic of Gilgamish. But the Iliad and the Odyssey passed for the earliest European poems for many hundred years, so they were the poems that everyone turned to.
The Odyssey is more popular than the Iliad. The Odyssey was probably written by Homer in his later years, thus was more refined than his earlier work. Moreover, the Iliad deals with battles and war, a harsher subject. The Odyssey, in comparison, deals with a fantastical adventure with monsters and gods.
He was a famous BC Greek author- actually a poet, He is supposed to have been Blind. Homer is credited with the Iliad and the Odyssey but there is also a theory there may have been more than one author involved- partially because of his handicap.
Because it is a beautiful way to transmit it and easier to remember for a someone to recite (how they got information around usually.)
Of course not. People have been writing poetry as long as they have been able to write. We have many many examples of poetry written more than 2000 years ago and some almost 3000. Homer's Iliad and Odyssey were written 2400 years before Shakespeare was born.
The Iliad and the Odyssey come from Greece. they were epic poems about ancient Greece, scholar's believe these poems were based on actual events, such as the war between Mycenaean Greeks, and Trojans
If you are writing it in an essay, than you would most likely italicize it: The Iliad, however, you can underline it, if you are writing by hand: The Iliad. That would be perfectly fine.
The Iliad records some important events during the final year of the Trojan War. The Odyssey concerns the journey of Odysseus after the war. Many scholars regard the purpose of the Odyssey as being to show that it is the journey (of life?) which is important rather than the destination. Epic poetry has been a mainstay of the art for more than 3,000 years. Some famous titles include The Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer, Aeneid by Virgil, and Don Juan by Lord Byron.
It is believed that Homer, the ancient Greek poet, composed the epic poems "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" orally rather than writing them down. He likely relied on memory and recitation techniques to compose and pass on his works.
For the Ancient Greeks the Iliad and the Odyssey told them how Greece had come to be the dominant power in the western Mediterranean, and also showed them what sort of people their gods were, and how those gods behaved. The Iliad and the Odyssey (and possibly some other epics, which have now been lost) were what the Greeks had instead of history books, and also what they had instead of a Bible.
