Many of the Cherokee hid out and did not go on the "trail of tears" but from 16,000-17,000 were caught and forced to leave. Any Cherokee that did not cooperate could see their belongings burned as they were led out under chains.
Of the ones that left from Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, 4,000 died from exposure and malnutrition.
