Originally, John Simpson Kirkpatrick joined the Merchant Navy out of England, but he deserted when he reached Newcastle, Australia. He worked his way around Australia at various jobs, even trying his luck on the goldfields. He then joined the Australian Army Medical Corps as a stretcher bearer under the name of "Jack Simpson" immediately at the outbreak of World War I, believing that he would be sent straight back to England. This may seem to be the actions of a coward. However, he was not a coward, as was seen by his brave actions at Gallipoli.
