The exact number of Greek troops in the Battle of Marathon is disputed among historians, but the most commonly accepted estimation is around 10,000 soldiers. This included citizen-soldiers or hoplites from Athens and its allies. The Greek forces, led by the Athenian general Miltiades, successfully defeated the larger invading Persian army in 490 BC.
The number is uncertain - best guesstimates are abuot 25,000 infantry with 1,000 cavalry in the force. All the cavalry and some of the infabtry were not engaged in the battle as they were being rowed around the coast to land and take Athens while its army was at Marathon 26 miles away.
The Greek historian Herodotus mentions 192 Athenians and 11 Plataeans .
