407 miles to the CHANNEL TUNNEL (or 417 miles to Dover [using the ferry]). This is the route:

  1. Take A595 CALAIS, from Whitehaven, to A66 PENRITH (to M6).
  2. Take A66 to M6 (S) to PRESTON, outside of Penrith.
  3. Take M6 (SOUTH) down to M1 (S) to LONDON. To bypass BIRMINGHAM, take M6 TOLL.
  4. Take M1 to The SOUTH to M25 to STANSTED AIRPORT and DARTFORD (to M20) at J6A.
  5. Take M25, around LONDON, to M20 to DOVER and the CHANNEL TUNNEL. You will be crossing the River Thames via the DARTFORD X-ING (toll).
  6. Take M20 to the CHANNEL TUNNEL at J11A. Or, if you wish to take the FERRY instead, continue on M20 & A20 to DOVER, where you will follow signs to the FERRY PORT.

From there, you will then take the CHANNEL TUNNEL high-speed rail shuttle or the FERRY from Dover to CALAIS France. So, in total the route is 446 miles either way.
