Ferdinand Magellan diccovered Magellan's strait, a western route to get to the Spice Isles by sea. He sailed using the ship Trinidad but was killed during the Battle of Mactan (a newly discovered island in the Philipines)Being the fist man to circumnavigate the world, he improved maps and voyages everywhere. He proved that the world was round, and that travel could be easier than a life-or-death voyage (despite the fact that he died).
Before becoming an explorer, Ferdinand Magellan had a very successful career in the military. During his time in the navy, he fought in many battles and helped conquer many villages.
1480-1521
Magellan lost his life in the Philippine's. His ship went on to eventually return to Spain.
Ferdinand Magellan was born in 1480 in Portugal to a relatively well-off family. He was the son of a court official, and after his father's death, he was raised by his mother, who belonged to the nobility. Magellan married Beatriz Barbosa in 1517, and they had two children, although little is known about his family life during his voyages. His commitment to exploration often kept him away from his family for extended periods.
