It's less than a mile. About 3/4 of a mile.
The walking/road distance is slightly over 1.5 miles (1.536 miles, to be exact) according to the measurements I got using Google Maps and a tape measure.

They are about a mile apart. Grand Central Station is on East 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, and the heart of Times Square is West 42nd Street and 7th Avenue. They are 5 avenue blocks apart. Normally, 3 to 4 avenue blocks equals a mile, but at 42nd Street, the distance between one of the blocks (Park Avenue to Lexington Avenue) is abnormally short.

At 7th Avenue, turn left, and walk south to 33rd Street. The east entrance to Penn Station is on 7th Avenue and West 33rd Street. The total walking distance is about a mile and a half.
