I'm getting an average of about 20 MPG in town and 30 MPG highway on my 2000 Sable, which shouldn't been too much difference than the 2002. EPA rating is 18/27.
According to the 2002 Mercury Sable Owner Guide : For all trim levels ( 18.0 U.S. gallons )

I get about 42 miles to a UK gallon - mixed driving with 50% motorway driving at speeds I should not document.
Mine gets about 16 MPG
A Mercury Mountaineer can get up to 14 miles to the gallon. This all depends on what road your traveling on.
