With the 400 V8 in a car weighing over 2 tons you should expect very poor fuel milage in the range of 12-17 mpg. The 428 V8 would get even less. Needless to say it is a gas hog.
Around 18-19 mpg city and 28-30 highway is the best you will get.

The 1997 Bonneville is rated for 23 miles per gallon on the highway. In the city, you'll only get sixteen. On average (city and highway), my Bonnie gets 20.2 mpg, which sounds about right. Your mileage may vary.
