The nearest border crossing is Detroit/Windsor, 372 miles away. But that requires going through both Chicago and Detroit, which will add a lot of time. Sault St. Marie is less than 400 miles and would probably be a lot faster.
You would have to drive through: Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Or drive across the bridge in Sault Saint Marie into Ontario and follow the water to Windsor, then cross the bridge/tunnel into Detroit.
