It opened on the 20th of June, 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint in London and is currently Australia's oldest operating mint. The Melbourne Mint opened in 1872 as a branch of the Royal Mint in London and together with the Perth Mint, produced most of Australia's predecimal coins until its closure in 1967. The Sydney Mint opened in 1855 as a branch of the Royal Mint in London and produced most of Australia's early coin requirements and many British gold coins together with the Melbourne and Perth Mints until its closure in 1926.
