A 30 caliber rifle is actually .308 inches in diameter. In NATO terms, all calibers and ammunition are specified in metric and the 30-06 is 7.62mm. (But NATO does not use that cartridge anymore, they use a shorter 7.62 that fits the .308 hunting rifle, the FAMAS assault weapon, and the old M-14).
