There are about 2200 mosques in France. Every major town has at least one. It is common to find two or three in middle or small-sized towns. For example the town of Nevers (fewer than 40.000 inhabitants) has two mosques. If you ask French-born people, they will often consider only the larger ones as 'proper' mosques, and tend to think of smaller mosques or these with a simple design, as not being real ones.

The oldest standing mosque in France is most probably the mosque of Tsingoni, in the oversea department of Mayotte, in use since 1538. In mainland France, Marseilles had its mosque, located in the Muslim cemetery, long before the French Revolution during which it was destroyed.

The largest French mosque is located in Evry, 25 km south of Paris.
