I don't think it would be possible to accurately answer this question because it is very hard to define exactly what a "mountain" is. Plus, you have multiple peaks that could either be said to be just that, or possibly defined as separate mountains.
Then there's the whole issue of the massive mountain ranges underneath the sea. Not all of these have been mapped - or probably even discovered.
An easier question might be how many major mountain RANGES there are on earth. But I'm sure you would get disagreement even there because some of them flow into each other without much of a break.
