The decade in the 20th century with the most recorded Atlantic hurricanes was the 1950's with 106 named storms of which 70 storms attained hurricane intensity. However, the 1990's had the greatest number of named storms, 110 of which 63 became hurricanes. Also, it is worth noting that many storms in the earlier decades may have been missed due to the limited technology of the time.
2005 was the most active hurricane season on record with 28 named storms and 15 hurricanes. There were so many storms the hurricane center had run out of names so the last 6 names used greek letters. By the end of August there had been 12 named storms compared to 4 by the end of August 2009.
