New Zealand sent around 100,000 men and women to the conflict. The population at the time was just over 1 million, so a significant portion of the population went. Around 18,000 died and around 40,000 were wounded. Given the population of New Zealand at the time, this casualty rate per capita was greater than any other nation that took part in the war. When thinking about World War One, we, as New Zealanders often think about the battle at Gallipoli, there 2721 New Zealanders lost their lives, this is about a quarter of the New Zealanders that landed there.

From a total population of just under one million, we sent one hundred thousand men and nurses. of that number, we lost eighteen thousand men. The highest relative loss of any combatant nation in either world war. In w.w.2 we lost eleven thousand from a total population of two million.
