What is something special about Newfoundland and Labrador?
I spent 12 years working as a minor in Northern Ontario and my love for Newfoundland kept drawing me home each year until 1982. I had enough of the loneliness and quit my job to come home where I feel very contented today. I have seen the very same thing happen to many Newfoundlanders over the years. Newfoundland has a spiritual draw to it's people.
Why did the Newfoundlanders not want to join confederation?
The political people of Newfoundland were all for confedersation - it was the population that didn't want it. The population didn't see how they would benefit from the trade with the other colonies. Newfoundland's main export was fish, like Nova Scotia's. Nova Scotia was closer to the other colonies, so it'd be easier for these colonies to buy fish from N.S. Also, because NL was so far away from the mainland, many people were concerned that they would end up paying taxes to build a railway they'd never use. (We're doing this is history right now :D)
