Female crabs will only mate once, immediately after they have their terminal moult. Females carry the male's sperm around with them for up to two years. The females can fertilize several batches of eggs with the stored sperm during this time.

It really depends on the crab. My hermit crab hasn't molted for many months and he is perfectly healthy.
