First I would say that it is important that ALL people, not just Israel, believe in one God. The world through Israel, according to the Bible, is supposed see that one God and believe. Second, we are not contradicting the idea of gods, but asking about One God. Think about it, if there is more than one god, than by virtue of that fact, those gods are not superior to each other in totality. B/c they are not superior, they are not truly God, but gods. The idea of God is that there is a being that is wholly and truly above all other gods. If there are more than one, then by nature of that fact, none of them are gods. It is important that we understand that there is one true God, b/c one God, gives us One Truth, and One Truth unifies us in that One God. with many god's many versions of truth exist.
