Auschwitz had 3 parts on the main site, and 45 sub camps. Auschwitz I (with the brick buildings- the original camp), Auschwitz II (Birkenau) and Auschwitz III (aka Monowitz, later Buna). For a few months (November 1943-May 1944) Auschwitz II was an independent camp, but was then merged back into the Auschwitz group.
