I've always asked myself the same question. I think Jesus spoke to each person individually in their hearts... each person was free to accept or reject his message (with their hardened hearts.) Jesus certainly didn't have to shout or yell to be heard. In my opinion, he might have used some sort of telepathy.

After Jesus was crucified, then rose from the dead, then went back to heaven, his disciples (closest group of followers) were still on earth. Many of them were also killed or put in jail for sharing about Jesus. At the time preaching that Jesus was the son of God was almost like a death wish in many towns. All this is not to say that there were no Christians or even few Christians, just that all people did not accept Christianity.

Many people feel platonic love for Jesus, it is a part of typical mass manipulation into doing something you want, e.g. religion. It is welcomed if you think highly about Jesus (unless you are from Jewish community - they do not accept him as a prophet).

The criteria extended past just been a Jew. Jesus did not seem to them to be fulfilling the requirements for the Messiah. He challenged many of their beliefs and practices. Many Jews do accept Christ. Also many Jews today have rejected God as well.
