The term "Unit" could mean an organization of any size. Usually a unit was a unique group such as a Regiment or a Company, which contained approximately 250 men. These units were given its own coat of arms that is referred to as the Distinguishing Unit Insignia, which was usually(not always) issued as a pin to be worn on their collar.

So an Infantry Division contained many units within it. The typical Infantry Division had 3 Infantry Regiments containing 3 Battalions, with 4 companies in each battalion.

On the other hand, there were 3 or 4 Divisions within a Corps. Two Corps made up an Army. And two or more Armies made up an Army Group.

The numbers vary from unit to unit, time frames, country and other factors. The only thing that is consistant is that there will always be someone in charge. The 'Order of Battle' or manpower allotment changes according to the needs of the military.
