Polio was one of the most dreaded childhood diseases of the 20th Century in the United States. There were usually about 13,000 to 20,000 cases of paralytic polio reported each year in the US before the introduction of Salk inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) in 1955. Polio peaked in 1952 when there were more than 21,000 reported cases. The number of cases of polio decreased dramatically following introduction of the vaccine and the development of a national vaccination program. In 1965, only 61 cases of paralytic polio were reported compared to 2,525 cases reported cases just five years earlier in 1960.

Uncountable. Given that his vaccine was developed in 1955, between his vaccine and the later Sabin vaccine (which began use in 1962), the global incidence of polio has dropped from 300,000+ per year to under 2,000 per year, with hope that a final eradication may occur sometime in the next decade or two.
Thus, is could possibly be said that Jonas Salk's vaccine has saved more than a 100 million people.
(one note on the wording: Salk and Sabin developed a vaccine to prevent polio. There is no cure for someone who has contracted polio.)
It isn't certain death to have polio. The only way you can die of polio is if it reaches your respiratory system and paralyzes your lungs.
Jonas Salk developed a vaccine for polio not a cure for polio. There is no cure for polio. Polio at the time was a very serious and feared disease.
Very much so
Very many
50,000 people died of polio.
about 1,100 died. I don't know how many survived. :/ in 1984, 300,000 people were killed but i dont know how many people survived.
There were only 706 people who survived
4 people survived
700 people survived on the titanic
There were 200 people who survived the Johnstown flood
5000
In 1908, life was quite different compared to today. People relied more on manual labor for tasks, there was limited technology, transportation was mainly by horse and carriage, and communication was primarily done through letters or face-to-face. Society had different norms and values, and industrialization was transforming the way people worked and lived.
The answer depends on whether you want the ratio of people in the US with polio compared to people with polio in the rest of the world (or the whole world), or the compared to people without polio in the US.
few people survived no
250,000 people survived the 2004 Sumatra Tsunami.
Only about 14,007 people actually survived!
