The accident occurred when a fire-extinguishing system went into operation in error aboard the submarine, Dygalo said. He said the dead included sailors and shipbuilders. The submarine was heading back to shore on its own power, and 21 people injured in the accident were evacuated to a ship that was escorting the sub. There were 208 people total aboard the vessel.
Not according to the reports so far, it is reported to have been a fault with the fire fighting system which inadvertently operated-presumably the dead were drowned or suffocated. CNN and BBC will have further reports I'm sure
Information is still being sought as to the exact number of casualties and what actually happened. Early word is that a firefighting system spontaneously and erroneously became activated at some point during evaluation operations at sea. It is probable that it displaced air in portions of the submarine, and individuals there suffocated. Links are provided below.
