Three astronauts died during training for the Apollo 1 mission. They were Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. They were trapped in their capsule on the launchpad during a routine training session when an electrical fire broke out inside. The poisonous gases and intense heat ended their lives. The hatch could not be opened in anywhere near enough to time to save them.
The crew of Apollo 13 were in danger of losing their lives after their spacecraft was damaged in an electrical explosion, but returned safely to earth after a massive international effort to bring their crippled spacecraft home.
