How many countries are there in the world?

There are 196 countries in the world, although some controversy still exists. The US government does not recognize Taiwan as an official independent country and considers there are only 195 countries in the world. But it has not agreed to Taiwan's incorporation into China. There are 193 members of the United Nations and that number often gets mistaken for the number of countries in the world. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has 159 member states as of February 2013. The member states of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are those states which have joined the international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. The IAEA was established as an autonomous organization on 29 July 1957. Though established independently of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the IAEA Statute, the IAEA reports to both the UN General Assembly and Security Council. Refer to the relevant link below for the full list of member states. While 'countries' is the commonly-used descriptive term, owing to the absence of a formal British constitution and the long and complex history of the formation of the UK, the countries of the UK have no official appellation. As a consequence, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are not formal subdivisions of the United Kingdom. This is a difficult question. Depending on your source, you could get any number. The most acceptable number is 196. There are 193 states in the United Nations. So what about the other three? The Vatican is officially recognised as a country by most UN members. The Vatican refused a position in the UN because they did not wish to be involved in World politics and chose to serve in a religious capacity instead. Kosovo and Taiwan are two other countries that meet all criteria to be seen as independent countries but are not accepted by all members of the UN. Who was the verified tallest man of all time?

User Avatar
The tallest person in history for whom there is irrefutable evidence was Robert Pershing Wadlow who stood 8 ft 11.1 inches (2.72m). He had problems standing and had an operation to fit a brace to his leg. On July 4, 1940, while making a professional appearance at the National Forest Festival, a faulty brace irritated his ankle, causing a blister and subsequent infection. Doctors treated him with a blood transfusion and emergency surgery, but his condition worsened and on July 15, 1940, he died in his sleep. He was 22. IS'NT THAT JUST SAD L.J
Asked in Cooking Measurements, Demographics, Height

What was the average height of a man 100 years ago?

User Avatar
Average height world wide or in a specific country? Worldwide the average height today is just below 5'8". It's hard to tell the overall average 100 years ago but honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if the average was around 5'5" give or take. In the US, the average height 100 years ago was about 5'6"-5'7" (that is if counting all the people in the 20-79 year age group like many studies do, although now they include 80+ year olds now since our life expectancy is also increasing) and today is 5'9.5". It is definitely connected to diet, primarily nutritionally (or malnutrition in the case of countries like Pakistan), often beef (high in particular proteins) is cited as being connected to this change in average heights. In Southeast Asia this average has increased, today's average in countries like the Philippines is around 5'4". ** The British Army fed their grenadiers (beefeaters) beef to help them grow, they presumed, in stature. Note: stature may play more of a role in other factors which also affect survivability, which have little to do with diet, (such as warfare and disease) though diet is the over-riding factor in the past 100 years. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It should be noted: Grenadiers had to be 6 feet tall, and wore tall beaverskin hats to appear more intimidating, as they were the front line troops of the British Army. Beef is high in creatine, which is an essential ingredient to building strong muscles as well.
Asked in Racism, Demographics

What is the percentage of racism in America?

User Avatar
Original answer: I won't say racism is non existence in America. Rather there is still racism among the whites towards the black Negros, who had to fight hard dating back the days of slavery to date. However the percentage of racism has come down considerably. My answer: You cannot reduce racism to a percentage because different people have it to varying degrees. Most people would live beside a person of another race but many still only marry within their own race. I strongly object to the original answer's implication that is is only white-on-black racism in the US (but out of respect for other opinions, I won't delete or alter it). In fact, you could argue that there is as much, if not more, black-on-white racism. As evidence, look at how white voters elected president Obama, largely ignoring his mixed race while blacks overwhelmingly voted for him, often because he was considered black. In the US, there are people from all over the world. There are some people from every origin who have racist views about various other groups. And yet, despite all that, the country works surprisingly well and, in all fairness, racism is lower than in most other countries in the world. Homogeneous countries typically have the highest racism. Hopefully common sense will prevail; If we believe in the concept of logic while realizing that racism is a political term and not really based in logic, as is nothing political, then we are forced to look at the term in a slightly different manner than is common among most Americans. That humans prefer the company of people who look like themselves has been documented by several studies concerning the reactions of newborns to their caretakers. For too long, so-called social progressives (perhaps they once were) have controlled the hearts and minds of people who are not seriously concerned with solving our most grievous social issue, preferring to allow their personal political biases to get in the way of clear thinking. Since racism is such an inflammatory word, I think it would behoove us to tone down our phrasing and realize that "racism" and even ethnocism, if there even is such a word, are natural and common weaknesses that we all share. But since weaknesses can be strengthened, it is not something that we have to be stuck with for the rest of our existences. Unfortunately, getting rid of useless prejudice is an individual endeavor often encompassing many disparate issues and thought processes and is not always well advised. This is an us vs. them world whether we like it or not and there are times when sticking with one's own can save one's life. The trick is recognizing when separation is necessary and when it's just plain silly. For example, it would be insane for a "liberal-minded" Boer family in South Africa to live in a predominantly low income African neighborhood, or as some farmers have discovered, isolated from other Boers and surrounded by tribes other than their own. On the other hand, for an American to refuse to live next to people of other races whose background is more similar to his than many individuals with similar facial features and skin tone is ridiculous. This is the problem with ideology, it too often gets people killed and it continues the problem without even a trace of resolution. If pragmatic people and not ideologues had tackled the problem of racial prejudice in the beginning of the battle in this country, we would have been brought together instead of torn apart, and we are being torn apart. Just because our citizens are less vocal about their hatreds doesn't mean they don't still have them. But, alas, this is not how we humans have ever chosen to do very many things.
Asked in Islam, Demographics

How many Muslims are there in the world?

User Avatar
As of October 2009, there are about 1.57 billion Muslims of all ages living in the world today (in more than 200 countries of the world). This represents 23% of an estimated 2009 world population of 6.8 billion people. (per study done by Pew forum). Refer to related link below. 60% of these Muslims live in Asia, mainly Pakistan, India, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. 20% of these Muslims live in North Africa and the Middle East, from Morocco to Iran. This shows a person how many Muslims are non-Arab and that Islam allows people of any background to convert and accept the religion. The country currently with the most Muslims is Indonesia. Refer to related questions below for more information.

Number of guns and gun owners in USA. Most estimates range between 39% and 50% of US households having at least one gun (that's about 43-55 million households). The estimates for the number of privately owned guns range from 190 million to 300 million. Removed those that skew the stats for their own purposes the best estimates are about 45% or 52 million of American households owning 260 million guns). Some recent estimates: A 2011 Gallup poll estimates that 47 percent of US households own a gun. A 2007 Small Arms Survey estimates there are 88.7 guns per 100 Americans (#1 in the world for guns per capita) A 2010 estimate from the NRA states "Privately owned firearms in the U.S.: Approaching 300 million, including nearly 100 million handguns. The number of firearms rises over 4 million annually."

What is an example of demography?

User Avatar
Demography is the statistical study of human population. It can be a very general science that can be applied to any kind of dynamic human population, that is, one that changes over time or space (see population dynamics). It encompasses the study of the size, structure and distribution of these populations, and spatial and/or temporal changes in them in response to birth, migration, aging and death. Examples for demographic changes and pattern can be given widely. Europe's population is declining day by day. Mortality rate is high in comparison to low birth rate, As a result growth of population declines. Poulation is aging there, On the contrary in Africa or South Asia growth rate is on rise. Better medical care, comparative better living standard declines the mortality rate (especially death of new born and perinatal child death). Fertility still kept high. Number of children per family also high. In 1970 Pakistan's population was merely 60 million, now 40 years later it is more than 120 million. Its a demographic catastrophy, some can argue for that.

Asked in Mexico, Demographics, Ethnicity

What is Mexico's ethnicity?

User Avatar
Mexico is an ethnically diverse nation, and the Mexican constitution defines the country to be multicultural. Most Mexicans are Mestizos, people of mixed European ("White") and Native American background. They account for 60-80% of the Mexican population (between 67 up to 90 million in 2010). The Native American, or Amerindian population ranges from 10% to 30% of the population (between 11 and 34 million in 2010) and such people are the descendants of Native American peoples who inhabited Mexico before the arrival of Europeans during the 16th century. Some ethnic groups including this classification are the Nahuatl, Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec, Otomi and Totonac. There is also a percentage of Mexicans of white European ancestry, representing 9 to 17% of the population (10 up to 19 million in 2010). Most European or "Criollo" Mexicans are of Spanish descent, including Basques, Castilians and Galicians. There are also many descendants of other European ethnic groups, including French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Irish, Polish, Romanian, Greek, Russian, and British from contemporary (since 1821) immigration as well as many first or second-generation immigrants of Canadian and American descent (since 1900). There are also many people from African descent (i.e: "Afro-Mexicans"). Now largely assimilated in the general population, they have historically been located in certain communities in southern Mexico. They comprise 2% of the general population (1-2 million). Mexico has traditionally welcomed immigrants and refugees from conflicted areas throughout the world. Middle Eastern Mexicans are the result of such policies; right now this ethnic group makes up to 1% (1.1 million) of the Mexican population. Most "Arab Mexicans" trace their origins to Lebanon, with many other from Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, and Palestine. There are also Mexicans of Turkish, Iranian, Israeli (Middle Eastern Jews), and Armenian descent. More recently, there have been many non-European migrants to Mexico, specially East Asians (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans), as well as Southeast Asians (Filipinos). They make up another 1% of the Mexican population (1.1 million). The human characteristics of Mexico can be likened to other people, for they are Caucasian, of average height, and have blond hair. People in Mexico display the same human characteristics as the people everywhere else in the world. They have families, they love and hate, they live their lives as best as they can.

How many people die a month of crohns disease?

Readily available cause of death statistics do not list Crohns as a specific condition. In the United States, deaths related to the digestive system amount to 9.6 percent of the total number of monthly deaths. This translates into approximately 4,000 people per month who die from some form of digestive ailment including cancer. Crohns disease would be a very small percentage of those people.
