How many people don't know they are breaking the first commandment?

Answer by a CatholicI try to do an Examen either every evening, or first thing in the morning, and, of course, I start with the First Commandment. I would be very, very surprised to know of anyone who does not break this Commandment on a daily basis. For those of you who don't know the Commandments by heart, here is the First Commandment as taught in the Catholic faith:

1. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

How many of us set things before God. If you get up in the morning, and the very first thought that you have, or the first thing out of your mouth is not praise and thanks to God for seeing you through the night, guess what, you've broken this Commandment. If you make up a budget and anything comes before your donation to the Church and charity, guess what? Actually, if you love anything more than keeping all of His Commandments, guess what, yup, you've broken the First Commandment.

We are all sinners, saving Our Blessed Lord, and His Blessed Mother. We are all called to repentance and to atone for our sins. The question should then be, "how many people KNOW that they are breaking the First Commandment?"
