The current record is Hurricane John in 1994. John started as a tropical wave of the coast of Africa and was followed into the Pacific ocean. There in the Eastern Pacific off the coast of Mexico, it turned into a hurricane and reached Catagory five before going into the Western Pacific then turning into a Typhoon. Typhoon John then did a oval track before returning into the Central Pacific. It traveled over 13000 Km (making it the second "farthest traveled") and lasted as a tropical storm/hurricane/typhoon for 31 days making it the "Longest Duration Hurricane/Typhoon"

It lost power a little bit by the time it was in the mid Atlantic but it was yet still a hurricane form. By the time it was at the coast of Florida it was a powerful hurricane. It ended in Houston. That was when it did the most damage.

The U.S. Gulf Coast has been hit by many hurricanes. Some of the more infamous ones include Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Hurricane Camille in 1969, and the Galveston hurricane of 1900.
So far in 2013 (as of June 8) there has only been one hurricane in 2013; Hurricane Barabara, which briefly became a hurricane before making landfall on Mexico's Pacific coast. Note that hurricane season has only just begun, and probably will not peak until August or September.
