Not very many it was actually difficult to become instantly rich
Many of the 49ers built houses and stayed in California. Many of the poor or average wealth people who found gold became extremely rich, but working to find gold was very hard and dangerous. About one in every five people who got to California to find gold was dead in only 6 months. Either people became really rich, or they died really soon. Most people who came to find gold had slaves work for them which made the work a lot easier. Many people who became rich started big businesses. Some businesses, including Wells Fargo were big parts of gold mining and are still around today.
Very few of the "49'ers" - the people who went to California in 1849 and the following couple of years - ever struck gold and got rich. Most of them became merchants or farmers or ranchers, and their descendants still live here in California for the most part. Some people DID get rich, not by MINING gold, but from selling things that the miners needed.
