Do to the lack of antibiotics there was no way to remove infection with out removing the limb. There was a reported 240,000 British soldiers that suffered total or partial amputations of their legs or arms.

There are many things that can be brown and have no arms or legs. A snake can fit this description, it has no arms or legs and slithers around. Some worms are brown and do no have arms or legs.

Some prosthetic legs are very advanced and others are simpler, and it can take a lot of time to learn how to walk after a leg amputation.
