Japan is a growing population and the size of the fish does matter when trying to feed the horde. The question is inaccurate it should state "what should the Japaneese prefer to eat!", in this way we could further acknowledge other resources readily available [that they could turn to], as they are a nation of very intelligent people and could easily turn to other sources if neccesary, or provoked towards [in some intelligent way]. I don't think that they prefer the whales, I think that if sardines were the size of whales they would preferrably hunt them. There are no woolly mamaths left on this planet any more [maybe for the same reason], there were other kinds of japaneese in the past history. The previous answer is very incorrect. Firstly, Japan has over 100 million people, and 3.2 million isn't even 5%.
