Ringworm is not actually a worm, it is a fungus, and it is found on the surface of the skin. In most people the immune system can prevent infection. Many people acquire ringworm from kittens or cats, which may or may not show symptoms. Ringworm is most often a small, isolated lesion which goes away quickly with proper treatment.
Dead skin carries more than enough nutrients for ringworm to survive. It is easily spread and therefore never runs out of nutrients.
Ringworm itself does not typically cause death in humans. However, complications from severe fungal infections that can result from untreated ringworm may lead to more serious health issues in rare cases. It is important to seek medical treatment if you suspect you have a fungal infection related to ringworm.
