It is possible he had alcohol in his system when he was found incoherent on 3 October 1849. It is highly unlikely (after four days in a hospital) he still had alcohol in his system when he died on the 7th.

There is a common misconception that Edgar Allan Poe died of alcohol poisoning, but there is no definitive proof to support this theory. Poe's cause of death remains a mystery, with some suggesting it could have been related to epilepsy, rabies, or other medical conditions.

Many people did at first, because his drinking problems were very well known. In addition he was found in an incoherent state in the early morning lying on a plank on the sidewalk outside Ryan's saloon. Naturally, people jumped to the conclusion that Poe had gone on a bender and drank himself to death, but there is no documentation to that effect.
