XM is a satellite radio and comes to you via satellite. AM doesn't need to use satellite to broadcast it uses a radio band. If AM needed satellite we wouldn't have had it since the 1920's.
People who use satellite dishes for television reception are more apt to lose reception during inclement weather than someone who has a satellite radio. The difference is the dish and antenna. The dish is pointed in just one direction, while the antenna is omnidirectional. Because of this, those with satellite radios can still enjoy reception during inclement weather.

An XM satellite radio antenna cannot be used as a cell phone antenna as they use a different type of connection. Satellite signals operate on a different frequency from cell phones and use different technologies in their antennas as well.

You should be able to. I have a 2005 ford focus zx3 that uses xm satellite radio, which was bought at Best buy then I had them install it. It goes through the radio, so you choose which station on the satellite then match it up on your radio. If you do install it on your own, make sure you know what you're doing ^^

I only add that last part because a boat is a general term and could mean an ocean going vessel in which you could leave the foot print of the satellite radio service.
When you use a 3G service, you're using radio to communicate with a base stationthat's never more than 2 or 3 miles away from you, and usually 1 mile or less. And by the way ... Everything that anybody can ever use an artificial satellite foris accomplished with radio waves. That's the only way anybody can send instructionsor programs to a satellite or get any data or programs from a satellite.
