The number of casualties during this war were not very high. The total number of deaths in the war was 5,083, not all of them were attributed to battle. Many soldiers died from diseases, such as typhoid. As for the Spanish casualties, 2,159 died on the battlefield, while an estimated 50,000 died from diseases.

Battle deaths were nominal but malaria and yellow fever were the big wartime killers.

The US had 385 battle deaths and 2,061 other deaths (disease, wounds, etc).

Another total lists 2910 total US deaths, 2565 of which were from disease, which indicates the primary concern during warfare in tropical climates.
