How did Macbeth become king?
Macbeth became king after being persuaded by his wife, Lady Macbeth, to murder the original king of Scottland, Duncan. Once that was done, the thanes assumed Duncan's sons would be promoted to the throne, but they both ran away in fear they might be murdered as well. With that, Macbeth took advantage of his positioin by saying Malcom and Donalbain (Duncan's sons) killed Duncan so he could be king himself. It worked.

It isn't that simple. One might argue that the female characters in Macbeth drive the males to horrendous acts, as Lady Macbeth does with Macbeth. In addition, there are many references made to women as being weaker and gentler than men. However, these references are usually used to explore gender roles that society forces its inhabitants to adhere to, and many are used ironically. One example of this is when Macduff tells Lady Macbeth, "O gentle lady,/Tis not for you to hear what I can speak./The rpetition in a woman's ear/Would murder as it fell" (II.iii.96-99). Although Macduff believes the news of Duncan's murder is too violent a fact for a woman to be aware of, Lady Macbeth acted as accomplice to the murder. It can really be argued either way, although I believe the evidence is stronger that it is not a misogynistic play.

People nowadays have a stereotype of women in Shakespeare's time as being weak and submissive, which Lady Macbeth is assuredly not. However, so many of Shakespeare's female characters do not conform to this stereotype, that it suggests that the stereotype was not held necessarily by Shakespeare or his contemporaries.

Technically Macbeth only murdered Duncan in the begining and young siward at the end. Then he had the murderers go to kill Fleance and his father. Fleance escaped so he wouldn't count, and Macbeth also had the murders go to kill the Thane of Fife (macduff) and ends up only having the family killed. Macbeths wife in the end dies of what no one really knows but it can be argued that he was the cause of her death. He also slays young siward before macduff challenges him.
